In Psalm 23 David states "the Lord is my shepherd". A shepherd watches over and provides for his sheep. A shepherd values his sheep so much that he is willing to lay down his life for them at the onset of impending danger. Later, in John 10 Jesus describes himself as "the Good Shepherd".
As the bride of Christ, we are the sheep. By following Jesus, our Shepherd, we become the light in the darkness and the salt in the earth. Our identity is not in ourselves or others, but instead it is in Christ.
